Township releases "How To" reminder for residents

The township last week released a “Guide To Mahwah Recycling” on its website. With many families cleaning out their homes before the holiday season, this serves as a good reminder of Mahwah’s procedures.

Items OK for curbside pickup:

  • Tied newspapers
  • Tied magazines
  • Smooth cardboard
  • Tied corrugated cardboard
  • Plastic food/drink containers
  • Plastic containers (codes 1-7)
  • Aluminum cans and other products (rinsed clean)
  • Clear, green or brown glasses and jars

Items that need to be brought to the recycle center:

  • Metal pots, pans, bowls, utensils, and other metal objects
  • Hangars
  • Small appliances
  • Computer paper and other paper products
  • Brown bags
  • Office files
  • Batteries
  • Clothes
  • Computers and printers
  • DVD, CD, and VCR players, and TVs
  • Radios
  • Microwaves

Mahwah’s recycling center, at 142 N Railroad Ave., is open Monday-Friday, 7 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., and Saturday from 7 a.m. – 1 p.m. All items should be brought to the center in labeled containers. More information is available by calling 201-529-3344.

  • Containers for toxic substances
  • Wax coated paper or cardboard, like milk/juice containers
  • Paper with grease, paint, etc. on it
  • Plastic bags
  • Shrink wrap
  • Styrofoam or plastic utensils
  • Aluminum foil
  • Light bulbs
  • Drinking glasses
  • Mirrors
  • Paper cups
  • Paper towels, napkins, or tissues
  • Paper wrapping with plastic/foil wrappers
  • Hard covered books
  • Toys

The county has a program set up to dispose of paper and documents (mobile shredding days) and hazardous wastes.

The next scheduled paper shredding day and computer/electronics recycling day is set for Saturday, November 5 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the .

The next household hazardous waste collection is scheduled for Sunday, October 16, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. at Bergen County Community College in Paramus.

Refrigerators and freezers can be recycled through the NJ Clean Energy Program.
