Mahwah's Joyce Kilmer School Remains Closed Through Wednesday

After a staff member tested positive for the coronavirus last week, the district announced the school wouldn't open until Thursday at least.

MAHWAH, NJ — The Joyce Kilmer School won't reinstitute in-person learning until Thursday at the earliest, the district announced over the weekend.

This news follows an announcement last week that a staff member at the school had tested positive for the coronavirus.

"We recognize that the changes in planning for your son’s or daughter’s educational day is placed in flux every time we learn of a new positive case and are charged with investigating the impact on the entire school’s physical wellness," read a letter from Interim Superintendent Leonard Fitts, published to social media.

"Decisions to open or close are not easy to make and we want you to know that we are assisting with a thorough yet expeditious case review in order to screen each matter and get our students back to school with immediacy."

Unfortunately for the district, they've had a few difficult decisions to make over the course of the last week, as the Joyce Kilmer School was one of three in the district to close for in-person learning.

Mahwah High School and Ramapo Ridge Middle School also closed after positive coronavirus tests.

Mahwah High School is scheduled to return to in-person learning on Sept. 30, while Ramapo Ridge has scheduled a date of Oct. 6 as their target for a return to the classroom.

As for Joyce Kilmer School students, though the district announced remote learning would continue until at least Wednesday, the letter didn't offer an explicit date for return.

"We will continue to monitor this situation and advise you of a confirmed return date as soon as we are made aware," Fitts wrote.
