WASHINGTON, D.C. — New Jersey native Kellyanne Conway is stepping away from her role as a senior adviser to President Donald Trump, she announced Sunday.

In a statement posted to Twitter, Conway said she will be transitioning out of the role — counselor to the president — at the end of the month. Her husband, George T. Conway III, who has been a vocal opponent of the president, will also be taking a step back from the Lincoln Project to "devote more time to family matters," he announced.

On her husband's public comments targeting the president, Conway said "we disagree about plenty but we are united on what matters most: the kids."

"This is completely my choice and my voice," she continued. "In time, I will announce future plans. For now, and for my beloved children, it will be less drama, more mama."

Conway said her four years in the administration have "allowed me blessings beyond compare" and called the role "humbling."

She became the first woman to successfully manage a presidential campaign after Trump's victory in 2016, but she wasn't without critics.

Walter Shaub, the former Director of the United States Office of Government Ethics, didn't mince words about how he perceived Conway's impact on American politics.

"Kellyanne Conway is a master manipulator who has served fascists and done devastating and lasting harm to our republic, which now sits on the brink of possible total destruction, and she facilitated a regime that destroyed families and put kids in cages, while effortlessly stomping on government ethics rules, lying to you, and fomenting hate," he wrote.

"Just look at her tonight," he added, commenting on the way some reacted to the news. "She is at the top of her game in this moment engendering empathy from the rubes upon her departure from a disgraceful stint in the White House that has wrought pain in the lives of so many families and individuals. She is (e)very bit as brilliant as she is corrupt."

The news of Conway's departure came a day after her 15-year-old daughter Claudia took to Twitter to announce she was seeking emancipation after her mother was announced as a speaker at the Republican National Convention.

The younger Conway added that her "mother’s job ruined my life to begin with. heartbreaking that she continues to go down that path after years of watching her children suffer."

On Sunday, she clarified that she wasn't seeking emancipation due to her mother's job, but "because of years of childhood trauma and abuse."

She later added that she would be taking a break from social media after it had become "too much."

"thank you for the love and support. no hate to my parents please," she wrote.

Conway, who is a native of Atco, New Jersey, now owns a home in Alpine that the couple bought in 2007 for $6 million, according to NJ.com.
