'Pedals' Law' That Would Place 5-Year Ban On Black Bear Hunt Advances In Senate
Pedals, the bruin who gained an internet following for walking on his hind legs, was reportedly one of 562 bears killed last week.

A five-year ban on hunting black bears in New Jersey got one step closer to going into effect as a state Senate committee approved the legislation Monday.
The Senate Economic Growth committee voted 3-2 to advance the measure, called “Pedals’ Law” after the bipedal black bear that gained fame on the internet for walking upright through New Jersey neighborhoods was apparently killed Oct. 10.
Senator Raymond Lesniak, D-Union, introduced the bill.

Pedals was one of 562 bears killed during the extended bear hunt, the state’s first bow and arrow hunt in 40 years.
Pedals reported death sent shockwaves through a now-shut down Facebook page dedicated to him and other hunting pages and blogs online. Alleged posts from hunters who allegedly specifically targeted the bear due to his notoriety.

The legislation would require the Division of Fish and Wildlife to create a five-year plan for controlling the black bear population using non-lethal methods.
An Assembly committee voted to ban bear hunts permanently in New Jersey. That legislation is moving through that legislative house.
The measure now goes to the full Senate for a vote. If both hoses approve the legislation, it will go to Governor Christie, who may either approve or veto it.
