Ramapo College Enters International Nursing Honor Society

Nursing students were inducted into Sigma Theta Tau

The Nursing Department is undergoing major changes at , which recently inducted its first batch of students into an international nursing honor society.

The program changes began last November with a generous donation from a Franklin Lakes couple to help establish the. Future nursing students at Ramapo College will have the opportunity to take advantage of larger simulation nursing labs and computer labs, as well as more classrooms. The nursing program is once again headed for a big change, as they are preparing to receive their charter for Sigma Theta Tau, the International Nursing Honor Society.

Sigma Theta Tau is the only international nursing honor society worldwide, with members belonging to 469 chapters who live in 86 countries. The mission of Sigma Theta Tau is "to support the learning, knowledge and professional development of nurses committed to making a difference in health worldwide.”

The society explains its vision as working to "create a global community of nurses who lead in using knowledge, scholarship, service and learning to improve the health of the world’s people.”

Thi semester, Ramapo College held its first Nursing Program Honor Society Induction.  Candidates that were asked to be a part of Ramapo's Chapter of the International Nursing Honor Society, Sigma Theta Tau, were asked based on their overall grade point average, and their performance in the nursing program. Ramapo is hoping to receive their charter for STTI by the summer of 2012.

“It was such a great honor to be among the first students from Ramapo to be inducted into Sigma Theta Tau. It is a huge accomplishment, and I look forward to what the future has in store for me, and my career as a nurse,” says senior nursing student Milagros Cueva.

Nursing students and their family members were audience to a short lecture during the ceremony, which counted as contact hours for any RNs present. After the lecture, the students were inducted as the first members in Sigma Theta Tau at Ramapo College of New Jersey.
