Ramapo College Takes To Internet To Celebrate 2020 Grads

Ramapo College is using the hashtag #CapsOffRCNJ, creating a virtual platform for graduates to celebrate in the absence of a live ceremony.

MAHWAH, NJ — Arching Day is the beginning and the end of a college career at Ramapo College. It marks the first page and the end of the final chapter. For the graduating class of 2020, the ending of their story, at least figuratively, will remain unwritten for a while longer.

"The most storied tradition in our history is arching," said Vice President of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs Christopher Romano in a video posted to the college's website.

"It symbolizes the opening and closing of your college experience."

According to the Ramapo College website, the Arching Ceremony, along with the college's graduation ceremony, have been postponed.

However, the college rolled out a variety of video content and social media initiatives to connect with their graduates virtually over the weekend.

In a message to graduates from the college, staff and faculty sent a message of congratulations via video, in addition to the arching celebration video and a message from Sen. Cory Booker.

"I want to say to the 2020 graduates that I am so grateful for your grit and your guts, for your service and your sacrifice. Everything that you did on your journey that's led to this day," said Booker.

"I congratulate you, I celebrate you and I think you for making us so much moreso Jersey strong."

On social media, the college is sharing posts tagged #CapsOffRCNJ, with many students donning their cap and gown. (And some popping celebratory bottles of champagne.)

It's unclear when the college could announce a new date for a graduation ceremony, but in the message to students, it was made clear that an in-person celebration was still being planned.

"Remember, Ramapo College is still committed to honoring and celebrating the Class of 2020 in person in the future, even if the timing and format is currently beyond our control," it read.
