UPDATE: Police Say Route 17 Will Open Monday

Rt. 202 may reopen Sunday evening

Route 17 in Mahwah, in both the North and South directions, will be open for the morning commute Monday, Mahwah Lt. Stuart Blank told Patch.

Police previously believed the major roadway would need to be closed due to flooding.

Route 202 remains closed, as of 4:30 p.m. Sunday, with police hoping to reopen it sometime Sunday evening.

“It all depends on how quickly the [Ramapo] River recedes, but we’re not sure that it will very quickly,” Chief James Batelli said.

Franklin Tpke. up to the state line has been opened, though a number of cars were pulled from water when trying to navigate township roads earlier in the day.

“Once the sun came out, we actually had bumper to bumper traffic on Island Road from sightseers,” Batelli said.

The chief recommended residents stay home Sunday evening, as many roads are closed, and roads remain impassable in many sections of Mahwah.
