Speeding Concerns On Major Street In Mahwah Addressed By Council

Residents in the area of Bellgrove Drive at Indian Field voiced concerns of speeding on that road; the Mahwah council addressed them.

MAHWAH, NJ — Mahwah residents in the area of Indian Field said they do not want to see a tragedy happen on Bellgrove Drive before the speeding concern in the neighborhood is addressed.

At a township council meeting last week, residents asked council members to address speeding on the municipal street, where area residents, they said, can be seen walking their dogs, or strollering their children.

"I just don't want to see anyone get hurt," one resident said.

A petition started by one of the residents was circulated among neighbors, many of whom — the resident said — signed on, asking officials to take specific actions that included stop sign and speed bump installation, electronic surveillance and / or law enforcement presence on a continual basis.

A speed bump, township officials said, can't be installed on Bellgrove Drive, as it is a major street.

Mayor James Wysocki said at the meeting that he is discussing alternatives to speed bumps with township engineer Mike Kelly, and has asked the police department to erect and maintain a suitable sign there. Kelly said a radar speed sign might also be a good thing to have on that road.

Another possible idea put forward by Councilman Robert Ferguson was a speeding "ticket blitz," or police crackdown on that road to encourage a change in driver behavior.
