NJ Man Fatally Shot Neighbor, Himself Following Noise Complaints: Prosecutor

The victim, James Bellamy, 66, was reportedly shot and killed by Arthur Hillman, 63, who then shot himself Sunday morning, authorities said.

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — Authorities say a North Jersey man who shot his neighbor before turning the gun on himself in a murder-suicide over the weekend had previously made several complaints to police regarding the level of noise coming from the upstairs apartment.

The suspected murder-suicide happened Sunday morning at an apartment building on Linden Street in Hackensack, Prosecutor Gurbir S. Grewal said.

When police responded to a 911 call of shots fired at the apartment complex around 9:20 a.m., they found James Bellamy, 66, dead next to the building's elevator. Bellamy had been shot multiple times, Grewal said.

A resident showed officers to the back parking lot where they found the shooter, Arthur Hillman, 63, dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in his 2011 Honda Civic, the prosecutor said.

Bellamy lived in apartment 4J and Hillman in 3J. Hillman had complained several times to the Hackensack Police Department regarding the noise coming from Bellamy's upstairs apartment, Grewal said.

Hillman was in possession of a loaded .40-caliber semi-automatic handgun, which authorities believe was the weapon used to murder Bellamy. Detectives also found a loaded .38-caliber weapon on Hillman's body, Grewal said.
