7 Reasons To Visit Monmouth County Library

After a move from North Jersey, this columnist views the sights, sounds, and tastes of Manalapan through fresh eyes.

I love the library in Manalapan, otherwise known as Monmouth County Library or Headquarters. You can walk along the stacks, pull out a book at random and be transported to another place where you can see the world from someone else's perspective. The best part? You don't have to leave Manalapan. But that is just one of the many reasons to love Monmouth County Library.

Here are some more exciting reasons to visit:

Free Movies
I'm always amazed that people still pay money to rent or buy movies. The library has all the new releases, tons of TV shows, old films, and classic favorites. Most movies can be rented for up to a week. Keep an eye out for their Lucky Day rack, it's on the corner of the circulation desk and they'll put up the newest releases to rent for two days.

Free Music
Somebody tell you about a new band they want you to check out? Before you buy it, literally check it out at the library. If the main library doesn't have it, you can search all the libraries in Monmouth County and place a "hold" on the CD. Then, it is usually just a matter of a few days before it arrives at headquarters.

Any Book You Want
For books, not only can you search libraries in the county, but if that falls short a librarian can search all the libraries in the country to get almost any book you want or need -- all for free.

Special Events
Right now, all of the libraries in Monmouth County are commemorating the sesquicentennial of the  Civil War. And just a few months ago, a great  was held. New and exciting events are constantly happening at the library, so keep your eyes peeled to this page for upcoming events!

Groups and Meetings
There are author talks, book groups, lectures, business and finance programs, support groups,  health and well-being education, art exhibits and more. Check out their monthly calendar to find something for you.

Totally Free Wi-Fi
Stop in with your laptop or other portable device and tap into their library's free Wi-Fi network. Access the web, check e-mail, or browse the library catalog all from the convenience of the library. I'm actually submitting this article through their Wi-Fi!

Ask A Librarian
Have a question? About anything? Need some facts in a hurry? Ask a librarian. You can chat over the web with a librarian here or call them to talk in person (732) 431-7222.

The library is free to residents of Manalapan and member municipalities and is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The library is closed on Sundays during the summer.
