CeleBritain: Celebrating British Influence
Bloomsday is a commemoration and celebration of James Joyce's novel Ulysses. Follow Leopold Bloom, Stephen Dedalus and Molly Bloom around Dublin on June 16, the day the novel is set.
The library will be celebrating Bloomsday a little early, so please join a lively discussion and enjoy selected readings by Mícheál ÓMáille, Irish Language Chair of Monmouth's Claddagh na nGael (Irish Shore) and librarian, Donna Mansfield. While Ulysses has a reputation as being difficult, the readings will show that it is also lyrical, clever, charming and very funny.
ÓMáille will also provide background about Ulysees and put the novel in the context of the times and the great myths that influenced it. The traditional of celebrating Bloomsday started in 1954, on the 50th anniversary of the events in the novel. Joyce fans all over the world celebrate the unique literary event, with a range of cultural activities including Ulysses readings and dramatizations.
