BELMAR, NJ — The surfer who rescued a deer caught in the surf Sunday morning off Belmar has been identified as Thomas Buckley, a Belmar lifeguard, according to News 12.

At 7 a.m. Sunday, a deer swam into the ocean at 15th Avenue in Belmar, and was unable to swim back to shore.

Local resident Adrienne Tully told Patch she and a small crowd of onlookers watched as the deer was able to climb onto the jetty twice, but was unable to make it back to the beach.

That's when Buckley paddled over, somehow got ahold of the deer and swam with it back to the beach, while he remained on his board.

"From my perspective, he guided it to the sand," Tully said.
