BELMAR, NJ — Soaring oil prices mean more pain at the pump for New Jersey residents, with the average gas price hitting $3.75 per gallon across the state — and $3.90 in Monmouth County — according to AAA.

Nationally, gas prices have hit their highest marks since 2014, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). But there's some good news. Thanks to the internet, it's easier than ever to find the best savings at the pump in town.

Why Are Gas Prices Rising?

The high cost of crude oil has been the main culprit behind increasing prices, according to AAA. Moderating winter weather and optimism over a potential fading of the omicron variant have also led to increases in demand, the company says.

"More drivers fueling up here coupled with a persistent tight supply of oil worldwide provides the recipe for higher prices at the pump," AAA spokesperson Andrew Gross said in a news release. "And unfortunately for consumers, it does not appear that this trend will change anytime soon."

Russia is a major producer and exporter of crude oil and natural gas. According to an NPR report, investors are concerned that the conflict will disrupt some exports on the ground, while sanctions will hinder others.

At a news conference last week, GasBuddy representatives said gas prices could go up by as much as 50 cents in the coming months.
