About your Reading Eyeglasses

Ask the Optician Your optical questions answered by Joel C. Wolf , Licensed Optician and Owner of Village Opticians

My eyes seem to always feel “watery” lately. I find myself blinking and trying to get them “clear” when I’m doing tasks such as sewing, drawing and playing board and card games. What could be causing this?
What you’re explaining can be a sign that you either need reading glasses or a stronger prescription in your existing pair of reading glasses.

I already wear prescription glasses for distance, will I need to change these when I get my reading prescription?
You can still wear your “distance” glasses and change to reading glasses when you are performing up-close types of tasks. Your optician can also change your lenses in your existing glasses to a progressive lens that accommodates both your prescriptions in one lens. This way you can wear the same eyeglasses all the time.

Can I buy over the counter “reader” type eyeglasses from the drugstore to address my vision problems?
One-size-fits-all reading glasses do not work well for most people. People usually have different prescriptions in each eye, have prescriptions that are not perfectly centered in the lens and require specific adjustments to the frames to best fit their faces. Over the counter “reader” style eyeglasses can not properly fulfill any of these needs. Often times, patients complain of headaches and discomfort and fail to realize that those “readers” they picked up as a “quick, inexpensive fix” are causing more problems rather than “fixing” anything!

How do I get the longest wear out of my new prescription eyeglasses?
First and foremost, follow your optician’s instructions for the proper care of your glasses. Improper care easily causes damage to your lenses and frames.
When choosing to buy a singular pair of glasses, avoid trendy frames that might go out of style quickly.
Choose a frame style with spring hinges, which allow the temples to flex slightly outward without breaking the eyeglasses.
Ask for scratch-resistant coating on your lenses. This will help keep your lenses free of scratches, therefor providing you with clearer vision for a longer period of time.

I don’t want to reuse my old frames. Can someone else use them?
YES! There are plenty of people in desperate need of eyeglasses without the means to get proper optical care. Your old, outdated prescription eyeglasses will provide someone in need with a beautiful gift of vision. PLEASE, ALWAYS DONATE YOUR EYEGLASSES THAT YOU ARE NO LONGER USING. We always have a bucket in our lobby so you can deposit your eyeglasses and be assured that they will go to the Lions Club and be distributed to someone in need.
