Hearing Booms In Ocean County? It's Training At The Joint Base

If you're new to the area, you can expect to hear the sounds and rumbles all weekend, officials said.

JOINT BASE McGUIRE-DIX-LAKEHURST, NJ — If you're a new resident of Ocean County, you're probably wondering about all the booming Sunday morning.

It's training sessions at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, which were sending rumbles and booms through much of the county.

The noises were being heard and felt over a wide radius, prompting an alert from the Ocean County Sheriff's Department warning that people would hear and feel the training.

The base conducts various training exercises nearly year-round, ranging from in-flight training to practice firing mortars and other explosives. The training can go well into the evening.

Readers reported hearing the noise as far away as Manasquan and Belmar to the northeast of the base, and in Lavallette and Seaside Heights.
