UPDATE: Harry Wright Lake Waters Cleared for Swimming

County health testing ongoing at the Whiting recreation spot

All of Harry Wright Lake is open for swimming as of Friday afternoon, according to Cassandra Colgate, officer manager for the township's Department of Recreation.

Test results from the Ocean County Health Department yesterday showed that the fecal coliform level at Whiting lake's high side exceed the maximum allowed. Levels on Friday have been deemed safe.

With a lower bacteria concentration, the low side of the lake near Nature Drive remains open to swimmers.

The entire lake was closed to swimming mid-last week after county testing showed that fecal coliform levels at both sides of the lake were at an unsafe level. A day later, the low side near Nature Drive reopened when bacteria there decreased. Then this week, the entire lake was opened for swimming, but only for two days.

If there is a certain amount of bacteria per 100 milliliters of water, the health department takes daily samples until the bacteria is down to an acceptable level for swimming. Until then, they close the affected beach to swimming.

Solutions to keeping lake waters free from geese were discussed at Monday's  meeting, though .
