Driver 'Critical' After He's Ejected During Van-Pickup Crash In Manchester: Police
Breaking: The man was not wearing a seatbelt; his passengers suffered minor injuries; pickup's occupants were unhurt, police said.

MANCHESTER, NJ — A Maryland man was in critical condition after he was ejected from a van following a collision Saturday between the van and a pickup truck in Whiting, Manchester police said Sunday.
Micael Borges DaSilva Castro, 23, of Maryland, was listed in critical condition at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, as of Sunday afternoon, Manchester Capt. Todd Malland said.
DaSilva Castro was behind the wheel of a 2004 Chevrolet Express van that collided with a 2013 Dodge Ram pickup at the intersectio of Coolidge Avenue and New York Avenue shortly after 4 p.m., Malland said. The impact of the collision caused the van to roll over twice, throwing DaSilva Castro, who was not wearing his seatbelt, from the van, Malland said. DaSilva Castro was taken by medevac to the hospital, he said.

DaSilva Castro's passengers, Hysla Santos, 21, of Newark, who was in the front seat, and rear-seat passenger Luiz Ribciro, 20, of Elizabeth, were wearing their seatbelts and were taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center by ambulance, where they were evaluated for non-life-threatening injuries and released, Malland said.
Kenneth Work, 51, of Whiting, was driving the Dodge and neither he nor his passenger, Michelle Work, 58, of Whiting, were injured in the crash, Malland said. Both were wearing seatbelts, he said.

The investigation revealed that DaSilva Castro was driving the van east on New York Avenue and failed to stop a the stop sign at the corner of New York and Coolidge, driving into the path of Work's pickup truck, Malland said. Work, who was southbound on Coolidge, was unable to avoid the collision and hit the van, with the impact causing the van to roll two times, Malland said.
The van was carrying commercial floor-cleaning products, Malland said, so a hazmat crew was called in as a precaution, he said.
Assisting at scene were the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, the Ocean County Sheriff's Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit, the Whiting Volunteer Fire Department, Quality Medical Transport, MONOC paramedics and Berkeley Hazmat. Patrolman Michael Anderson and Patrolman Thomas O'Hare of the Manchester Township Police Traffic Safety Unit are investigating.
