MANCHESTER, NJ — Less than a month ago, the New Jersey Department of Education approved the Manchester Township School District's application for the expanded preschool program.

On Monday, some of the township's youngest residents started school in the district's universal preschool program.

Manchester received approval of a $3 million grant from the state on Sept. 9. Its program for 3- and 4-year-olds includes six preschool classrooms at Whiting Elementary School, an integrated preschool classroom at Manchester Township Elementary School, and two preschool classrooms at Ridgeway Elementary School.

In addition, the district is partnering with two preschools — Hilltop Nursery School and As We Grow — for up to five integrative preschool classrooms collectively, the district said.

The program will serve up to 135 students.
