One Person Killed In Route 70 Crash: Report

Police recruits tried to save the man's life, according to the report.

MANCHESTER, NJ -- (Updated, 2 p.m.) One person was killed in the Route 70 crash in Manchester that shut down the road for more than five hours Friday morning, according to a report.

NBC10 in Philadelphia reported the driver was a male and that Ocean County police recruits tried to save the man's life.

The recruits were headed to a nearby shooting range when the crash happened just after 7 a.m., according to the report.

Route 70 in Manchester was closed in both directions from about 7:30 a.m. until about 12:30 p.m., Manchester police said.

Manchester Capt. Todd Malland said the crash, near the intersection of Route 70 and Sam Pitts Road involved several vehicles "and at least one very serious injury."

The crash happened before 7:30 a.m. near the Manchester Township Department of Public Works facility, he said, but did not say whether public works vehicles were involved.

Route 70 was closed in both directions from Route 539 to Lakehurst Road -- which cuts off toward Pemberton -- while officers investigated and the scene was cleaned up, Malland said.

The Jersey Shore Scanner News Facebook page reported the accident involved four vehicles.
