Whiting School Looks Back On 60 Years Of Educating Students

Currents students and staff welcomed alumni and the mayor for breakfast and introduced a new mascot.

For 60 years, students in Manchester Township have been getting their elementary school education at Whiting School.

On Thursday, that milestone was celebrated at the school with great fanfare, including a breakfast, and assembly, tours of the school and educational programs marking the school’s 60 years of existence.

More than 50 invited guests attended the breakfast celebration, including 92-year-old Mary Clarke, who taught at Whiting in 1955.

Members of the school’s Junior Impact club led guided tours of the school during the breakfast.

After breakfast, a video presentation and the introduction of Whiting School’s new mascot, Wilma Wildcat, were all part of the schoolwide assembly titled “Celebrating 60 Years of Whiting School.”

Mayor Kenneth T. Palmer was on hand for the festivities and presented the school with a proclamation.

“As a resident, parent of two kids in our school system and the mayor, I am incredibly proud of the family like atmosphere at Whiting School,” Palmer said. “ The celebration truly captured the level of caring and devotion our teachers and staff have had for their students for the past 60 years. “

5. Wilma Wildcat is unveiled for the first time as former music teacher Anita Zalom and Principal Evelyn Swift lead the students and guests in singing the Whiting S chool song.

6. Mary Clarke, 92, was a teacher at Whiting School when it opened in 1955. She was presented with a commemorative quilt created by Middle School teacher Linda Bleeke.

7. Students portray The Beatles during the 1960s portion of the interactive presentation that had students portraying characters from the six decades that Whiting School has been open, while a video featuring photos from the past was shown on the screen behind them.
