Get clear on your why, what is your motivation: When we want something badly enough, we are motivated to do things that we maybe wouldn’t have done in the past in order to achieve whatever it is that we want now. In order to keep moving forward to our goal, it’s not enough just to want it, we need to know WHY we want it. It’s our why that will keep us going when we haven’t achieved our goals as quickly as we had hoped or perhaps had a set-back. So you must know your why and don’t judge it. It can be because you want to look good in a bathing suit, you’re pre-diabetic or maybe you think you’re a bad role model for your kids. It can be something entirely different, it doesn’t matter what it is, just know what it is and come back to it when you feel like quitting.

You don’t have to do it alone and probably cannot: That’s the mistake that most of us make. We believe that we know what we have to do and therefore think that we “should” just be able to do this. We don’t ask for help and that is why so many of us fail. If your plan isn’t working for you in spite of all you know, get some support and accountability. Hire a trainer, commit to a weekly fitness class (or 2), get a coach to support you in changing your eating habits, buddy up with a friend. Do whatever it takes to get you to where you want to go. It’s what I personally do in the areas of my life where I need to move forward and feel stuck or want to go to the next level. I know that I can’t do it alone and am beyond grateful that I don’t have to.
Watch your negative self-talk and end disempowering thoughts: Sometimes it’s blatant and sometimes it’s subtle AND it always holds us back. I’ve been really aware of my disempowering thoughts lately and the slightest adjustment in the way that I talk to myself can make the difference between my being stuck and feeling powerless to moving forward and powerfully enjoying the path. The interesting thing about these thoughts is that they emerge most often in the areas where we are experiencing the greatest challenges and then they keep us stuck. Start to pay attention and when they arise, tell them to go away and replace them with something that empowers you. And do this gently and without judgment. Don’t get caught in the trap of beating yourself up for having them.
