Akuaba Fashions Demonstrates Turban Head Wrap Style for Black History Month
A demonstration of traditional African turban style head wraps by Springfield Avenue business Akuaba Fashions was one of many events held on the Avenue during Black History Month in February.

A discussion of the history of traditional African head wrap styles and fashion and a demonstration were the focus of a special event hosted by Akuaba Fashions (1966 Springfield Avenue) as part of the Black History Month celebration presented by business owners on Maplewood’s Springfield Avenue.
Akuaba Fashion’s owner, Sarah, is a native of Ghana who noted that Ghana is also known for its traditional hand-woven Kente cloth in addition to distinctive head wraps. Akuabe Fashions provides hundreds of Kente stoles every year for graduating students at Rutgers University in addition to beautiful embroidery and clothing for men, women and children made from traditional fabrics from Ghana.
The Springfield Avenue Partnership will soon be announcing the winner of the online contest for an iPad2 donated by Every L'il Thing Florist (1573 Springfield Avenue) and Inc Pics (1608 Springfield Avenue). The annual program is presented by the Partnership, representing local business and commercial property owners, who invite community residents and visitors to celebrate Black History Month on the Avenue by participating in both fun and educational activities and events for children, families and adults.
