Art and Music features Jim Buchanan
Maplewood Library is happy to be an art and music destination.
Art and Music Reception
Jim Buchanan and friends will be the featured musicians this month’s Art and Music at the Library program. Jim will talk about his artwork, currently on display at Main Library, and Joanne Shaver will give us the scoop on her beautiful art glass collection on exhibit in the display case.
James W Buchanan is a retired music educator and full time musician here in Maplewood. Although most of his work is focused on performance with the Double Bass (string bass), he also performs on trombone, tuba, cello and electric bass. He has lived his entire life here in Maplewood (and Woodstock, NY) with his wife Carol, mother in law Mildred and his daughter Rebekah Harris.

Jim’s painting became a more serious part of his life after receiving a gift of art supplies owned by his father in law, the late painter Louis Stool of Bayonne, NJ. In addition to painting in the 70’s Jim began creating wood collage in the 80’s. During a challenging hospital stay in 2006-7 he visited the Recreation Room at Memorial Sloan Kettering to take art therapy and became fascinated with pastels. Since that time Jim has shown in the Patient’s Art Show at MSKCC where some of his work hangs permanently. In addition, Jim has been active with other artists in this area through the Friends of 1978 Art Space here in Maplewood.
On a personal note: I’d like to thank my wife Carol for her support in the creation process wherever it may take me. I can say the same about all of my family, Rebekah and Greg, Ben, Maayan, and Shoshanna, Mildred and all her children, my biggest fan club. Thanks to Joanne Beckerich and the Maplewood Library staff for your help on this exhibit. I have many local artists to thank as well for their tireless work encouraging their fellows in the arts….thanks Ellen, Evelyn, Mikel, Eric, Barbara, Judy, Joy, John, Ron, Ben and Lee.
