Gender Awareness and Gender Sensitivity: an Education in the Making!
A community effort to discsuss ways to raise awareness about gender diversity, children and youth.

Please join the Ethical Cultural Society of Essex County for an evening of networking and planning dedicated to creating more gender acceptance in our community. Joel Baum, Director of Education with Gender Spectrum (www.genderspectrum.org) will be visiting and sharing the experience of his organization working with schools, families and communities in service of gender inclusion for all children and teens. This action-oirented evening is designed to bring together individuals from our own community to discsuss ways to raise awareness about gender diversity, children and youth.

Gender Spectrum provides education, resources and support to help create a gender sensitive and inclusive environment for all children and teens. We accomplish this mission through school trainings, parent support groups and consultations, policy development, our annual Family Conference, and work with medical and mental health care providers, social service agencies, and others working with families and kids.
Joel Baum, MS, works with parents, schools, medical professionals, therapists, social service agencies, universities and other organizations as Gender Spectrum’s Director of Education and Training. Responsible for all aspects of the organization’s educational programming, he facilitates trainings, conducts workshops, develops curriculum, consults with parents/professionals, and provides resources in service of a more compassionate and inclusive understanding of gender diverse children and youth.

For the past 25 years, Joel's work as an educator has focused on issues of social justice and equity. Beginning his career as an award-winning middle school science teacher and school administrator, he has also served as a district administrator in Oakland, California, as well as a school reform coach with the National Equity Project. Joel has also been a Professor of Educational Leadership at California State University, East Bay for the last ten years, where he has developed and facilitated two distinct administrative credential programs.
