Maplewood Library Comes Alive With Art and Music

The Main Library is hosting the work of two wonderful Maplewood artists during the month of September.

Jane Dell, who recently had a solo show at the Monmouth Museum, is exhibiting her mixed media and collage works on the walls in the adult room. Each piece is a whirlwind of shapes, images and forms. Jane says of her work: “My series of mixed media on Mylar paintings explore the expressive and metaphorical potential of scale, the poetics of space and mental states. They represent a relative and curious universe, an arena that invites the discovery and unfolding of imaginative worlds. In these works, color, shape, and ironic surprises, set free from their mooring in representation, become vehicles for exploring spatial relationships while serving at the same time as

metaphors for the personal, social and technological interactions of contemporary experience.”

In the adult display case, Florence Wint is showing her sculptures, which reflect her use of fantasy, humor and color. Says Florence: ”My work always tells a story. I begin with one shape and then the journey starts; as odd, playful creatures begin to appear, slyly commenting on human inhibitions and propriety. The childlike quality underlying its sophistication reflects a naïve, antic and sometimes cuckoo take on life. I enjoy creating figurative life sculpture from a live model. Yet as I work with the clay, the sculpture moves from the real world into another realm. With my imagination free to roam I add fantasy elements, often combining animals and birds with the human form — the real with the imaginary — to try to capture the personality

of the model. I become fascinated by the narrative life sculpture that appears. The final touch is to add colored glazes and oxides to bring them to life.”

A reception with live music will be held on Saturday, September 22 at 1:00 pm. The artists will each give a short talk about their work. Music will be provided by the Well-Read Trio; Martin Leys, Jim Buchanan and Yuergen Renner.
