The Roots of Fall Procrastination
A short blog on how procrastination can be the result of overwhelm, especially at this time of year.
Though I'm not usually superstitious, I've been looking for a reason why writing this blog has been so difficult. I thought, perhaps, it was because it was the thirteenth in a series. Actually I do not believe that. I don't believe that luck, jinxes or destiny determine whether things do or do not happen. Most frequently it is our ability to put the effort that is necessary, the desire and courage to take opportunities, and, of course, the ability to stay focused.
So why did I procrastinate? This is a funny time of year, an end and a beginning. And I know I am not alone. Perhaps our To-Do list from the beginning of the year is still unfinished. Even as we begin to plan for the new year, there is so much we want to accomplish in these last few months of the year.
It can all be a bit overwhelming, and that overwhelm is main reason we are often paralyzed into inaction. When this happens, I find it best to "chunk" the activities into manageable blocks. Celebrating when I have completed each chunk and recognizing that it brings me closer to accomplishing all the tasks is how I keep myself focused.
