Classical music can evoke vivid images and tell compelling stories. Likewise, works of art can speak to viewers, inspiring reflection, imagination, and even musical composition.
On June 6 at 7:30 PM, Maestro Anthony LaGruth and the multigenerational Livingston Symphony Orchestra explore these connections in their concert, Pictures. The program opens with American composer Stephen Paulus’s Voices from the Gallery, a narrated work accompanied by a slideshow of famous artworks, imagining what the subjects in the paintings might be thinking or trying to say.
Next, Camille Saint-Saëns’s popular Danse Macabre depicts the legendary dance of death, featuring a devilish violin soloist and the eerie sounds of a skeletal xylophone.
The concert concludes with Modest Mussorgsky’s powerful Pictures at an Exhibition. In this beloved masterpiece, the audience joins the composer on a musical walk through a gallery of paintings honoring his recently deceased friend, culminating in the triumphant and majestic Great Gate of Kiev.
Tickets for this colorful live performance may be purchased at the door or through the orchestra’s website at www.lsonj.org.
