Fascinating NJ Personalities of the Civil War Era

November 6  New Jersey personalities of the Civil War era

2011 marks the beginning of the Sesquicentennial (150th) Celebration of the Civil War.  In its honor, on November 6 at 2:00 p.m. Durand-Hedden will present noted NJ author and Civil War expert Joseph G. Bilby who will do a slide presentation on the fascinating New Jersey personalities of the Civil War era.  Intriguing subjects include men and women, soldiers and civilians, politicians and merchants, heroes and scoundrels, from an airship inventor to nurses, prison escape artists, medal of honor winners and con men, and how the war and its aftermath affected their lives. The award winning book on which the talk is based will be available with all proceeds going to the NJ Civil War Sesquicentennial Committee.

From 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. visitors will also be able to view the exhibit, The Maplewood Woman’s Club: A Century of Service to Country and Community and stroll the grounds of Grasmere Park.  The Country Store will be open with its unique selection of souvenirs and books.

The Durand-Hedden House and surrounding Grasmere Park were designated a Maplewood Historic Landmark in 2006.  The Durand-Hedden House and Garden Association is dedicated to telling the story of the development of Maplewood and the surrounding area in new and engaging ways.
