Spirituals; Decoding the Past, Present and Future
In this teaching concert, we will explore the history of enslavement in the United States, learn the songs that came out of the period, and delve into their meanings. Teamwork, listening skills and leadership are incorporated through ensemble play, conducting, call and response and the creative process. We’ll take an in-depth look at the song "Follow The Drinking Gourd", explore what slavery looks like today and write our own songs of protest and hope.
Presented by Artists Reaching Communities, which uses the arts as a universal base to engage the Greater Newark community and inspire its inhabitants to live fuller, more artful lives.
