Link Between Performing Arts & Academic Grades Is Real

2nd Generation Performers Theatre Workshop (PTW) in Maplewood owner Dean Kravitz shares info on benefits of Performing Arts

My name is Dean Kravitz, and I am the 2nd generation family owner of Performers Theatre Workshop (PTW). We have students from all over the state who attend our classes year round, many of whom are on Broadway etc.

Want to see your children raise their grades and smile while doing so? I’ve got great news: it’s not just about hitting the books. It’s also about enrolling your kids in theatre arts classes. Research shows that children who sing/dance/act/ are FOUR times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement compared with non-performing students. The skills they pick up dancing or singing or acting also help them have enhanced motor, cognitive and social skills.

A report released by the Arts Education Partnership shows that children who take theatre arts classes have higher scores in reading, writing and mathematics than those students who focus only on academics. Both the National Endowment for the Arts and the U.S. Department of Education funded this study. With arts funding deeply cut in most school districts, these studies should encourage families to help their kids become more proficient in reading, math and writing by exposure to theatre arts.

Another study, done by The American Alliance for Theatre & Education, analyzed data from the College Entrance Examination Board to report students involved in drama coursework dramatically outscored non-arts students on their SAT by an average of 65 points verbal and 34 points in math.

Getting kids to socialize with others during these classes also helps them with self-expression; respect for others; empathy; self-respect and public speaking. In today’s hectic world, everyone needs to master the skills of listening, creativity, focus, perseverance, problem solving and socialization. We live in an ever growing right-brain world – and here at our PTW, we strongly believe adding theatre arts to your children’s schedule will open their lives up to success not only on stage but also academically.
