Community Corner
Goings on 'About Town'
Convenience stores ZBA hearing postponed, community garden signup, events at library, Dickens birthday, and — oh, yes, Patch has a new boss lady.

- Joanne Beckerich, she of "" fame, has graced us with a superlative list of Black History Month events at the Maplewood Library — Hilton and Main branches.
- Ali Enterprises, Inc., has requested that the Maplewood Zoning Board of Adjustment carry its hearing scheduled for tonight until March 7, so that it may meet with officials of the South Orange-Maplewood School District to discuss its proposal for a 7-Eleven convenience store that would operate 24 hours/7 days a week at the corner of Valley Street and Parker Avenue (currently a Shell Station). The request to carry to March 7 has been granted. Story to come.
- Members of the community will have the opportunity to sign up for a plot in the Maplewood Community Garden on Feb. 16 from 1-3 p.m. in Town Hall and from 7-8:30 p.m. at DeHart Community Center. Before then, an informational meeting for prospective members will be held on February 9 at the DeHart Community Center from 7-9 p.m.
- Today is Charles Dickens birthday. He would have been 199 years old today. Besides lending his name to Maplewood's own , he's famous for a few other things, including some novels (most first serialized) including The Pickwick Papers, Little Dorrit, Bleak House, Hard Times, Great Expectations, Nicholas Nickleby, David Copperfield, A Tale of Two Cities and, of course, A Christmas Carol. (It's also my dad's birthday — he's 75!)
- AOL, owner of Patch, has purchased the Huffington Post for $315 million. According to Advertising Age, "AOL will form a division called Huffington Post Media Group, including all of AOL's content properties from its local division Patch." We're hoping Arianna comes to Maplewood as part of a listening tour — she better hurry up before !
