Man Carjacked At Wawa In Maplewood Thursday Morning: Police

A 72-year-old man was shoved and carjacked around 4:30 a.m. at a Wawa in Maplewood, police said.

MAPLEWOOD, NJ — The Maplewood police are looking for a suspect after a 72-year-old man was carjacked at a Wawa at 4:30 a.m. this morning, they said.

Police said that Thursday, they received a 911 call reporting a robbery/carjacking that occurred in the Wawa Parking lot at 1511 Springfield Ave.

A man told them that after he left the store, an unknown man demanded the keys to his car.

The man shoved the victim and again demanded the keys. The suspect then reached into the man's pocket to remove the keys, police said.

The man entered the car and drove it eastbound on Springfield Avenue into Irvington, police said.

The man was described as between 16 and 19 years old, not wearing a shirt, blue jeans, and no facial hair.

The victim refused medical attention and was not injured, police said. He also said that no weapons were shown.

Detectives tracked the vehicle using the victim's phone and recovered it parked and unoccupied near 138 Hunterdon St. in Newark. It was towed to police headquarters to be processed for evidence.
