Maplewood Burger King Raises Money for Pediatric Cancer Research

The fast food chain on Springfield Avenue is doing its part in the annual drive to raise money for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

For the 11th year running, Maplewood's Burger King at 1833 Springfield Avenue will be participating in a chain-wide drive to raise money for pediatric cancer research and care at the Dana-Farber Cancer Insitute.

The chain-wide goal this year is $1.2 million, according to a company spokesperson.

When you visit the Maplewood Burger King, you can contribute by giving $1 to The Jimmy Fund through the A Chance for Kids program. The program runs from now through Sept. 6, 2010. With each contribution, restaurant "guests" receive a promotion card awarding prizes ranging from a Caribbean vacation to items on the Burger King menu (we're thinking you more likely to win some fries than a cruise!).

"The Burger King family around the world is dedicated to making a difference in the communities in which we work and live," said Ivette Diaz, director, corporate social responsibility, Burger King Corp. "We are pleased to support our franchisees' local philanthropic efforts and partner with such a worthy organization as The Jimmy Fund to benefit the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute."

A Chance for Kids and Burger King have raised nearly $9 million over the last 10 years for research and care at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. This year, Burger King restaurants in 10 states will participate in the campaign: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont. And one store will be Maplewood's own Burger King on Springfield Avenue, with store managaer Cathy Spurill at the helm.

A Chance for Kids supports the many young cancer patients who are treated at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's Jimmy Fund Clinic. It also supports research conducted at Dana-Farber ultimately aimed at helping pediatric cancer patients around the world.

"It is because of the compassion and support from the Burger King employees and their restaurant guests that we are able to move forward in our quest to effectively treat cancer, with the ultimate goal of developing cures," said Suzanne Fountain, director of The Jimmy Fund.
