Maplewood Firefighters Battle Irvington Blaze

Crews battled a three-alarm fire plus icy conditions on Grove Steet in Irvington.

Maplewood firefighters spent hours helping the Irvington Fire Department and fire personnel from East Orange fight a two-story blaze on Grove Street in Irvington last night.

The fire, which took place in a structure with buildings attached on both sides starting around 9 p.m. Sunday night, went to three alarms. "In fire terms, the house was 'ripping,’ " said Maplewood Fire Department Capt. Joseph Callaghan.

Callaghan reported, "We went right to work helping to extinguish the fire building. Other crews put out the adjoining buildings which were being affected by radiant heat." Cold temperatures created icy conditions as water from the fire hoses froze on the ground.
