Maplewood Forum Will Discuss ‘July 4th Fireworks Event’
The Sept. 14 public forum will give local residents and youth the chance to speak about their experiences with the Maplewood Police Dept.

In the aftermath of the July 5, 2016 incident when a black youth in Maplewood was assaulted by local police following the township’s Independence Day fireworks event, residents and citizens in neighboring communities will be given the opportunity to discuss their encounters with the Maplewood police department on Thursday, Sept. 14.

The MapSO Citizens Truth & Reconciliation Commission, a project of the Black Parents Workshop and the MapSO Freedom School, will hold a public hearing at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 14, at Columbia High School, 17 Parker Avenue in Maplewood. Parking will be available in lot next to the high school and on the street on Parker and nearby side streets.

The sponsoring organizations are urging youth to attend and share their stories. The public must sign up to speak upon their arrival at the event and they will be given the opportunity to share their experiences. Maplewood police department acting chief Jimmy DeVaul will attend the hearing in a listening capacity.
