Banned Books Week celebrates the freedom to read, the value of free and open access to information, and the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular. This year’s Banned Books Week is September 18 – 24, celebrating the theme “Books Unite Us. Censorship Divides Us.”

The American Library Association’s Office for Intellectual Freedom tracked 729 challenges to library, school, and university materials and services in 2021. Of the 1597 books that were targeted, the following is a list of the top 10 most challenged, along with the reasons cited for censoring the books.
