Maplewood Pool Attracts Crowds

Despite the recent wet weather, the pool remains the best place to get wet

The Maplewood Community Pool officially opened earlier this month. But the rainy weather had pool-goers holding off from turning out to welcome the beginning of pool season.

Saturday's sunshine, warm weather and a comfortable breeze brought the crowds poolside to enjoy a day of family fun, community socializing and, of course, plenty of laughing and splashing.

Boasting one of the only two 10-meter diving platforms in New Jersey State (the other is at Rutgers University), the dive tank was put to full use by exuberant kids clearly celebrating their first weekend of summer freedom, along with a few brave adults, taking the 33-foot leap into the 16-foot deep cool water below. Others leisurely floated and played in the main pool, while the kiddie pool was a constant theater of activity with squeals of delight, as toddlers and parents enjoyed  new water features such as shooting sprays and cascading showers.

Head pool operator Michael Banks, beginning his fifth season with the MCP, explained that the total water volume incorporated among the four pool areas was approximately 1 million gallons, (perhaps a little more after this June's record rainfall), comprised of 450,00 gallons for the main pool, 37,000 gallons in the training and kiddie pools and 335,000 gallons in the dive tank.
