Roman Gourmet Offers a Slice of Maplewood

'The Roman' has been providing home-cooked Italian food and pizza to Maplewoodians for nearly 40 years, but the Loffredo family is keeping things up-to-date with their gluten-free pies and recession specials.

For nearly 40 years, the Loffredo family has given Maplewood the gift of pizza.  Anthony and Giovanna Loffredo (or Tony & Joanne, as they're known to locals) opened The Roman Gourmet Ristorante in 1971, and the restaurant continues to grace Maplewood Avenue today–with good reason. The Roman, as customers know it, remains a family-run operation that serves an extensive menu of delectable, high-quality Italian fare.

Vinnie Loffredo, one of Tony and Joanne's four children (all of whom have worked at The Roman), currently manages the restaurant on a daily basis. You'll still find Tony and Joanne taking care of business, though. In fact, special batches of soup served at the restaurant are always handcrafted by Joanne. The soups—chicken, pasta e fagioli and lentil—are such staples that when Tony and Joanne returned from Italy this summer, customers who had been going through withdrawal were elated to see "Mom's Soup" back up on the board.

This week, The Roman celebrates Restaurant Week in Maplewood, offering 10% off any of their delicious fare, including pizza, entrees, salads and subs. They have also been consistently offering a recession special on Mondays and Tuesdays for months, which will continue after Restaurant Week is through. From a plain slice to their new gluten-free pies, this restaurant is ever growing and has something for absolutely everyone.
