Should You Say Gay On Your College Or Job Applications? Maplewood Panel To Discuss
Rainbow Youth Alliance SOMA is hosting an event in Maplewood next week for LGBTQ+ students about how to talk about their identity.

MAPLEWOOD, NJ — Not all LGBTQ+ students are comfortable "outing themselves," noted a representative from the Rainbow Youth Alliance of South Orange and Maplewood, so how or when to refer to their identity in a school or job interview is a matter that requires thought.
The group is hosting an event Tuesday night for LGBTQ+ students, family members, and school faculty members to talk about how teens might "authentically incorporate their own LGBTQ+ identity along with other personal characteristics into a compelling personal brand for college essays and internship or job applications."
The event, to be held at a local church at 7:30 p.m., includes the head of admissions for NYU, an internship recruiter for an investment bank, and others.

Panelists will also include a high school guidance counselor and a retail brand manager. The live discussion will be followed by a Q&A and light refreshments.
The group noted that they got a great response from college staff to their panelist request, and will incorporate some of those representatives in future events and workshops.
