US drinking laws.

Expat Life - Thirsty Work: Drinking laws

What is better than a jug of Pimms or a beer in the park on a lovely, sunny and warm day?

In England you can take your drinks to the local park to enjoy without anyone bothering you. However in USA thanks to a ban on alcohol, we are denied the joys of drinking in public outdoor spaces.

That's not to say it doesn't happen..... I have seen commuters with beers hidden in brown paper bags so they can have a swifty on the train home.....or couples drinking their wine at a local outdoor event in a clandestine manner. Thinking of taking a 6-pack along to the local music festival in the park? We are condemned to prohibition so you may want to be cautious.

Pimms is without doubt my favorite drink of choice once the weather warms up. I have now taught my American friends the delights of this yummy cocktail.

You need:

Pimms, Sprite or 7 UP, Orange/Lemon/Cucumber/Strawberries/Mint

Then:

Mix one part Pimms with 3 parts soda. Add the chopped fruit and ice.

But what is Pimms I hear you ask? The recipe remains a closely guarded secret, but it's refreshing fast is appreciated around the world.

Cheers!

Thankfully, here in the New Jersey suburbs we all have wonderful decks, patios and backyards to keep the summer tippling going without breaking any laws. There are also plenty of bars in town - Above in South Orange even has an outdoor roof terrace, and Highland Place in Maplewood has a few sidewalk tables and chairs.

Reminder!! The legal drinking age in USA is 21. In UK the bar staff will rarely ask for any ID unless you look under 18. Here in the States my Father-in-Law has been asked! He ofcourse was totally flattered that, at 60 years young, he may look under 21. (Ofcourse he doesn't - it's just the law, and at some venues they routinely ask for ID!)

DUI = Drinking Under the Influence. Also know as Drunk-driving. Know your limits. In New Jersey, a person is guilty of drunk driving if he/she operates a motor vehicle with a Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) of 0.08 percent or greater.
