Three Car Thefts Reported In Maplewood In 1 Week

The Maplewood police released reports from the middle of April, including three car thefts on different streets. Two of the cars were found.

MAPLEWOOD, NJ — The Maplewood police reported three car thefts in the previous two weeks. Two of the vehicles were recovered in another town after they were reported missing.

Here is the rundown:

Some time between 10 p.m. on Wednesday, April 12, and the next day, someone stole an unlocked Volkswagen from a driveway on South Pierson Road. The car was recovered in Newark several hours after it was reported missing, police said.

On Friday, April 14, someone stole an unlocked, running Infinity from the parking lot of Penn Tool on Springfield Avenue as the owner was outside speaking to a family member. The Infinity was also found hours later in Newark.

Around 11:05 a.m. Saturday, April 15, Officers Dolan and Jackson responded to the area of Springfield and Chancellor avenues on a report of a stolen Acura that was driving in the area, police said. Officer Jackson approached the vehicle at 200 Boyden Ave., where a man fled on foot, according to police. Atfer a chase, the officers arrested a Stephen Sylvain, 28, of Irvington. They charged him with receiving stolen property, possession of burglary tools, knowingly possessing a motor vehicle master key, and resisting arrest. He was taken to the Essex County Correctional Facility.

Also, last Wednesday, at 3:15 p.m., someone stole a locked BMW from Maplewood Avenue, police said.
