A Day in the Life of the Marlboro Mayor

Patch followed Marlboro Mayor Jon Hornik on Oct. 29, a typical Saturday for the mayor that became a 10-hour workday.

Amidst town council meetings, fielding resident's phone calls, securing next year's budget and campaigning for re-election, Mayor Jon Hornik said making time to get out into the community is a top priority.

"People in this town want to see their mayor," he said. "This is a typical Saturday for me."

Hornik attended five events on Saturday, and his schedule would have been more hectic if some events were not canceled .

From 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Patch followed Hornik to each stop (and ended the day as one exhausted reporter).

Hornik often refers to the residents of Marlboro as his "bosses," and any boss would like to see and talk to their employee as often as possible.

And even with such a hectic schedule, Hornik never seems to slow down. At every event, he was either the emcee or an avid participant, and was excited as he walked through each door.

Hornik even stopped at his old locker to see if he could remember the combination. The mayor lost the bet on that one.

The Marlboro mayor, no matter who it is, serves a population of over 40,000 and is bound to be busy. Residents elect the mayor as someone to watch their tax dollars, see that town services remain quality and take care of the behind-the-scenes work that keeps the township running. But not many people realize they also elect a personality that will be keeping a finger on the pulse of the community by immersing him or herself into it.

And as exhausting as the day was, Hornik was ready for more by the end.

"Where are we going now?" he asked.

Whatever the outcome of the Nov. 8 election, where Hornik will face mayoral candidate Craig Marshall, it is clear that the mayor's job is one of the most exhausting part-time jobs someone could ever want.
