Colts Neck Marine Awarded $10,000 Scholarship

New Jersey First Lady Mary Pat Christie announced today that U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. James Adams of Colts Neck has been awarded the New Jersey Heart of a Hero Scholarship.

In the company of ten other New Jersey residents, Adams was awarded the scholarship for higher education and career enhancement.

“Our veterans, past and present, are an extension of our greater New Jersey family,” said Christie. “We thank our private-sector partners from Walmart for helping us to initiate the Heart of a Hero scholarship so that our courageous service members can have an opportunity to achieve their dreams for a successful career and future. In the spirit of New Jersey Heroes, we are proud to help make a difference in the lives of these outstanding New Jerseyans who have served and sacrificed in the defense of our country and our freedoms.”

Scholarship recipients submitted miltary service records as well as outlined goals as to how they would use the scholarship. Recipients enrolled in an accredited college or university for 2012-13, and demonstrated a commitment to volunteerism and community contribution.

In June, Walmart donated $100,000 to the program to assist New Jersey’s military service members make their higher education and career goals a reality.
