De-Cluttering Your House: Three Tips
Not all levels of clutter are created equal. Everyone has that junk drawer or craft room they’ve been meaning to clean out. Others have an entire garage that’s so crammed with stuff they can’t fit the car in there. And then there are those who suffer from whole-house clutter that can actually get in the way of living their lives. Hoarders belong to this classification, representing a type of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder that affects one in four people with OCD.
Assuming you just have a mild case of clutter, there are ways you can methodically de-clutter your home step by step until you achieve success.
1. Break it up into Small Chunks
Start with five minutes. Five minutes a day devoted to one task is all you need, and you can build from there. Start small. For example, you can designate a spot for incoming papers by putting an inbox on a common area of your home, such as an out-of-the-way counter. Papers and bills tend to accumulate on the kitchen table, on our home office desk, on our dresser, in the car. By choosing one designated spot for all of them, you can easily drop your mail, school papers, receipts, warranties, manuals, notices and flyers in the inbox. Then, you can go through them at your leisure later without searching for anything.

2. Go Step by Step
Again, start small. Choose just one space to clear off. For example, clear off one counter. Keeping just one common area clear of clutter is important, especially in the kitchen where you can free up a spot to actually cook and prepare food. You don’t need a blender to sit on your counter, especially when you haven’t used it in months or years. Find a spot for it in a cupboard or get rid of it. You don’t need decorative candles on your counter either, especially if they’re just for show. Junk the stuff you no longer want and find a place for everything else. Once you’ve successfully handled that one counter, move to another room and do just ONE shelf. This is a great way to clear clutter without getting overwhelmed.
3. Fill a Trash Bag
As you really start to embrace your purging journey, it gets easier and easier to let go of stuff. Grab a trash bag and go through one room, or head to others if you’re on a roll. It can be fun to see how quickly you can fill it. Add trash, broken toys, old food wrappers, socks that haven’t had a mate in three months, receipts for that bagel you had two weeks ago – anything that no longer serves a purpose should be tossed.

If that seemed easy, grab another trash bag and go around your home collecting stuff to donate to charity. When it comes to clothing, consider donating it if you haven’t worn it in one year. Kids’ outgrown clothing, shoes and sports equipment also make great candidates for give-aways.
