Local Assembly Members: Trump Tax Scheme Means Huge Property Tax Increase for New Jersey Families
Houghtaling & Downey spoke out against President Trump's tax plan, which would eliminate federal deductions for state and local taxes

TRENTON -- Monmouth County Assembly Members Eric Houghtaling and Joann Downey criticized the Trump Administration this week for proposing a tax scheme that would sharply increase taxes on New Jerseyans by eliminating the federal deduction for state and local taxes. Elimination of this deduction would deal a devastating blow to New Jersey residents, leading to an increase in the average tax bill of more than $3,500 annually, according to the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center.
“New Jersey residents already pay the highest property taxes in the country, and under this plan our middle-class residents would be expected to come up with thousands more in taxes every year,” said Houghtaling (D-Monmouth), “The numbers speak for themselves, and it’s not an exaggeration to say this could force taxpayers out of their home and out of New Jersey.”
“Our middle-class residents are already struggling to make ends meet due to ever-rising property taxes, and this tax plan is completely out of touch with their needs,” said Downey (D-Monmouth), “New Jersey’s legislators and Congressional delegation can not and should not support such an immediate and devastating property tax penalty imposed by the federal government.”
