Marlboro Whole Foods Car Theft Attempt: Man Indicted Thursday

He removed car keys from the customer service counter and used them to get into a Volkswagen GTI sitting in the parking lot, police said.

Marlboro, NJ - An Old Bridge man was indicted Thursday for a Nov. 16 alleged attempted car theft at the Marlboro Whole Foods, said the Monmouth County prosecutor, where he took car keys belonging to the store president, sources said.

On Nov. 16, Eugene Richmond, 47, allegedly went behind the customer service counter in the store and helped himself to a set of keys kept on a shelf near the printer.

Richmond used the keys to open a black 2012 Volkswagen GTI parked in the store parking lot, authorities said. A Whole Foods employee confirmed the car belonged to the store president.

When the woman realized the theft and went into the parking lot, she found Richmond sitting in the driver’s seat, according to the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office.

The police were called and Richmond was charged with theft and burglary, the prosecutor’s office said. He was indicted Thursday for the crime of theft, taking the keys valued at between $200 and $500, and burglary, by unlawfully entering the vehicle, prosecutors said.
