Marlboro Boy Donates His Hair to a Worthy Cause

Chaz Surman grew his hair for more than a year so he could donate it through Pantene.

Sheri Murad was looking for a charity to become involved with, and decided she would help cancer patients by growing and donating her hair. To her surprise, her 9-year-old son Chaz Surman wanted to do the same.

Chaz is a fifth grade student at and a member of Cub Scout Pack 86.  In July, after more than one year of growing his hair, Chaz cut it all off at .

"While many young girls have embarked on this journey, I don't think as many boys have dared to," Murad said.

Murad said Chaz endured a few looks here and there, from kids in his class saying he looked like a girl to waitresses asking what the "ladies" would like to eat.

"At one point, I had told Chaz, 'If they look at your Nike sports shorts, high top sneakers, and zombie t-shirts, and they still think you're a girl, then there's something wrong with them.'" Murad said.  "He would just laugh and say, 'It's fine, I'm getting used to it.'"

But Chaz said he never thought about turning back. Even when his hair got in the way of his swimming goggles, or playing sports.

"I feel good about helping cancer patients."

Right now, Chaz is getting used to his shorter hair, and the fact that his older brothers are teasing him for his long locks.

But it won't be long before Chaz has to start combing his hair religiously again. The young boy said he is going to donate again, and is starting to grow his hair a second time.
