Moving Company FAQs to Keep you Informed

With an impending move, you probably have lots of questions you want answered before committing. From payment issues to in-person estimates, there are many factors that go into a move of any kind. Let’s take a look at some typical FAQs about moving companies.

At what time do I pay?

You will typically be asked to pay the bill at your new destination before the movers unpack your belongings. If you are asked to pay the whole fee up front before any services are performed, run the other way. Reputable movers won’t ask for the lump sum at time of booking. Most movers accept cash, money order or credit card, but not by personal check.

When should I get in touch with a moving company?

This is a case of sooner=better. This gives them enough time to free up resources, a truck, manpower, etc. You also get a better shot of the delivery schedule you want. Four to six weeks is a good time frame to go by.

Is an in-person estimate important?

Yes. Anyone who gives you a quote over the phone is not being very accurate. Things must be weighed and measured before a more realistic quote can be applied. Your mover should visit your home to ask questions, see what they need to move, and figure out the best way to do so.

Is there a better time to move than another?

Yes. If you have the power to choose, which many people do not, try to avoid the holidays, summer or at the end of the month. This is when movers are in demand and tend to be very busy, You’re less likely to get the personalized attention and ideal delivery slots when you choose these times, plus you may not have access to as many trucks in the sizes you want.

Will I get an exact amount to pay on my estimate?

An estimate is just that: an estimate. It should be fairly accurate but you’ll never know of the down-to-the-penny cost until everything is on the truck and it is weighed. If you require additional services, such as packing/unpacking or storage, these will add to your final bill.

Do I have to pack and unpack everything on my own?

No, although you can if you want. Most professional movers offer packing/unpacking services to save you time and hassle. If you prefer to pack your own clothing and sentimental items but want the mover to professionally wrap and pack valuable items like artwork and electronics, you can do so.

How long does moving day take?

This depends on several factors, not the least of which is how far away you’re moving. The duration will also vary by time of year, the weather, the amount of things you have to move, and the immediate environment. Moving from a multi-story apartment with no elevator takes longer than a ranch home, for example. Sometimes, it takes two trips to get everything transported.
