NJ Police Benevolent Association Endorses Rep. Chris Smith

COLTS NECK, NJ — The New Jersey State Police Benevolent Association (PBA), endorsed Rep. Chris Smith for his re-election to U.S. Congress. NJ PBA has over 33,000 members who are active duty law enforcement officers. Smith is the Republican running in the race. The same day this was announced, it was also announced the NJ Sierra Club endorsed his Democratic opponent, Josh Welle.

“I am thankful to receive the endorsement of the New Jersey State Police Benevolent Association. Our law enforcement officers put their lives on the line everyday to keep our families and neighborhoods safe. I am honored to support the law enforcement community and to represent them in Congress,” said Rep. Smith.

In the letter endorsing Rep. Smith and others, New Jersey State PBA President Patrick Colligan said: “... Your service stands out in your commitment to the men and women of law enforcement in New Jersey and around the nation.”

Pointing to Rep. Smith’s support of legislation that ensures the safety of officers, protects victims of crime and funds necessary resources to keep communities safe, Colligan praised Rep. Smith’s steadfast loyalty to New Jersey’s law enforcement community.

“And, most importantly, you have demonstrated respect for the officers who protect us when they have come under attack,” said Colligan.

Rep. Smith has a deep commitment to supporting the law enforcement community and their efforts to keep NJ-04 and the entire country safe. For instance, in 2010, Rep. Smith supported the “James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act.” This law improved services to those impacted by the 9/11 terrorist attack and also created the World Trade Center Health Program to care for victims of the attack. In 2015, Rep. Smith was an outspoken advocate for the reauthorization of the law, which funded the World Trade Center Health Program for 75 more years, until 2090.

Over the years, Rep. Smith has worked with the law enforcement community to write groundbreaking laws that allow law enforcement officers to get the training needed to prevent human trafficking and help locate missing citizens who have Alzheimer’s and disabilities.

The midterm election will be Tuesday, Nov. 6.

Smith has represented New Jersey's 4th District for decades, since 1981. NJ4 voted for Republican presidents in the past four elections: Trump, Romney, McCain and Bush. Democrats hope that the 2018 midterms, riding a blue wave of anti-Trump sentiment, could be their chance to flip NJ4 to blue.
