Scouting America Marlboro Troop 86 Eagle Court of Honor for Sunay Bhatt

Scouting America Troop 86 of Marlboro, Monmouth County, New Jersey, proudly announces the Eagle Scout rank advancement of Sunay Bhatt on December 12, 2024.

Sunay is a graduate of Marlboro High School and is currently pursuing his passion by studying Paleontology at Montana State University. His Scouting journey began at just five years old when he joined Tiger Scouts with Pack 12 in Edison. One of his fondest early memories is a trip to the Camden Aquarium — an adventure that sparked both curiosity and excitement.

After moving to Marlboro in 2014, Sunay joined Pack 86. Though it was a new community, he quickly felt at home and built lasting memories. He still laughs about the time the Cubmaster surprised everyone with a Halloween-themed cake at a meeting. The Pinewood Derby was another favorite tradition. “I loved crafting Pinewood Derby cars, learning about physics, and figuring out how to make them go faster,” Sunay recalls. More than any single event, however, he treasures the friendships he built. It was those connections that made Cub Scouts truly meaningful.

In 2017, Sunay crossed over from Cub Scouts into Boy Scouts and joined Troop 86, eager to grow his skills, strengthen friendships, and take on new challenges. His Scouting years were filled with unforgettable adventures — from exploring Laurel Caverns (including one memorable moment navigating the lower passages), to climbing gym lock-ins, Catamount ski trips, and the Tall Tree Adventure course. Educational outings, such as museum visits in Washington, D.C., and even late-night Lego building at Legoland, blended learning, fun, and camaraderie.

“Boy Scouts helped me develop valuable life skills, self-sufficiency, and self-reliance. It teaches responsibility and accountability,” Sunay shares. Through leadership roles including Den Chief, Patrol Leader, and Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, he learned what it truly means to guide and support others.

As a Den Chief, Sunay was commended by the Cubmaster for his warmth, patience, and ability to connect with younger Scouts. “I learned that patience makes you a better teacher,” he explains. He also discovered the importance of communication: “Good communication is about understanding others rather than simply being understood.”

Serving as Patrol Leader and Assistant Senior Patrol Leader deepened his understanding of leadership. Sunay came to believe that strong leadership begins with humility. “A good leader listens, stays grounded, and considers everyone’s ideas. Leadership means embracing humility,” he reflects.

A major highlight of Sunay’s Scouting journey was attending Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico in 2022 and 2025. These experiences offered both serenity and challenge. “Philmont gave me a chance to step away from the constant movement of the world. It gave me time to breathe and appreciate the beautiful backcountry while growing alongside my friends. It also tested my mettle,” he says. Summiting Mount Baldy pushed him to his limits and tested his endurance, making the experience both physically demanding and deeply rewarding.

With this confidence, love for the outdoors, and a deepening sense of purpose, Sunay approached his Eagle Scout Service Project with both passion and determination. For his Eagle Scout Service Project, Sunay led the construction of a bridge at Ramanessin Park in Holmdel, New Jersey. He first came across the bridge while researching the dig site at Holmdel Park, which interested him because of his passion for dinosaurs. Ramanessin Creek is known as a site for ancient fossils, making this service project especially heartfelt and meaningful.

The bridge was dilapidated and unstable due to its age, making it unsafe to cross. Sunay resolved to rebuild it so that visitors to the trails and Ramanessin Creek would have a safe and reliable crossing. The project taught him that leadership is not about doing everything yourself, but about trusting others and adapting when plans change. Unexpected challenges — including material delays and on-site adjustments — required him to think quickly and remain calm under pressure.

He coordinated volunteers of different ages and experience levels, balancing clear direction with respect for their ideas. Teaching construction techniques he had practiced beforehand reinforced the value of preparation while also showing him that learning is often a team effort. “Ultimately, the project taught me accountability, problem-solving, and the impact of service-driven leadership — lessons that continue to shape how I approach teamwork and responsibility today,” states Sunay.

“After the project was completed, as we were packing up, I looked back and admired all the hard work. I saw a father with his kids crossing the bridge, and he turned around to thank us. Moments later, a bicyclist crossed with ease. This filled my heart with joy and gratitude for everyone who made that moment possible,” marks Sunay. Through the project, Sunay strengthened his skills in accountability, communication, and problem-solving, and he truly let his passion guide him.
